Marine Biology with Oceanography BSc (Hons) - Career.
An average day is in the office, undertaking desk-top studies, report writing and dealing with clients and regulators, but I can often be involved in site work which keeps things interesting. I specialise in water management, investigating the causes of flooding, and possible solutions to flooding problems for private developers or local authorities.
You will be required to write a critical review and make a short oral presentation on each of your selected topics at weekly seminars. Much of the learning will be through independent reading. The breadth of subject coverage is intended to broaden and deepen your knowledge of topical issues in your specialist area, as well as to develop scientific writing and presentation skills.

Marine scientists are involved in research, analysis and forecasts in relation to the oceans, their life forms and coastal areas. As a marine scientist you'll analyse the sea and its interaction with the land, atmosphere, sea floors, animal life and plants, and use the information gained to predict changes to the earth's infrastructure, inform statutory legislation and encourage environmental.
Please note: This course was previously known as Marine Geography BSc with UCAS code F842. The land borders the ocean via the coastal zone. Understanding how these environments are related to each other is important for many societal and economic reasons, and requires an integrated approach to the subject, as most of the world’s population lives near, or exploits, the coastal zone.
About this Course. This is a 4-year course. During the first 3 years, you will follow an appropriate BSc degree course structure in one of the following: Marine Biology and Oceanography BSc. At the end of Year 2, providing a satisfactory mark has been obtained, you continue with Year 3 of the BSc course and proceed to a 4th year specialised course.
Provide students with knowledge of how the oceanography of a coastal sea supports biological production. Allow students to gain experience in the use of a simple computer model to design and carry out experiments on coastal oceanography. Provide students with practical experience of making basic, useful calculations applied to coastal oceanography.
Students will develop their writing skills through preparation of a 'News and Views' article based on a recent Nature publication. Students will then work in groups of 6 to analyse existing datasets under the guidance of a tutor. Students will make regular presentations to the group throughout the semester.
The majority of postgraduate applications are submitted online directly to the university. Practical experience gained of. Offshore data collection: e.g. filtering water samples for suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll. Offshore data processing, data integration (data from ADCP, CTD, transmissometer etc.), report writing and scientific discussion on oceanographic processes.
